Stokesbury enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in September 1915. Under the laws in force at the time he was considered a minor and required parental consent. In his enlistment papers a signature purporting to be his mother's agreed to his joining the AIF. In November 1915 the army was informed that the mother did not consent to his deployment. He was discharged in December 1915 after being absent without leave for several weeks.[2][3]
